After the euphoria

I want to see the following headlines (among others, I’m just getting started here) in the next few weeks, or, optimally, the next few days.

PRES. OBAMA ORDERS GUANTANAMO CLOSED

INDEPENDENT PROSECUTOR APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE BUSH ERA CRIMES

Then…

HISTORIC TRUTH COMMISSION IMPANELED IN WASHINGTON

CHENEY, RUMSFELD, GONZALEZ, OTHERS TO BE QUESTIONED

  1. They’re not going to close Guantanamo in a day or two. Even if they wanted to, we need somewhere to put everyone, particularly the non-American citizens. The same well-intentioned people on our side who want Guantanamo closed would be screaming (rightfully) if a hundred people were suddenly handed back to their native dictatorships where they’d inevitably be tortured. So it may be a while until His Changeness and Holder and the rest of the legal beagles come up with some form of appropriate court structure, particularly since the economy is a much more pressing issue for the voters who put them there.

    And yet, an encouraging start:

“GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Jan. 20 — In one of its first actions, the Obama administration instructed military prosecutors late Tuesday to seek a 120-day suspension of legal proceedings involving detainees at the naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba…”

Hell, even Glenn “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” Greenwald was mildly positive on this:

And in other Lesser of Two Evils news, Barry Hopenstein is planning to kill off the Mexico City policy.
